Bawku (U/E), May 16, GNA-A 15-member Board of Directors and a 108- General Assembly for the Bawku Municipal Mutual Health Insurance (MHIS) Scheme were inaugurated at Bawku at the weekend. The Board, which has Mr. John Abugri as its chairman, was mandated to give policy direction and to ratify proposals of management of the scheme.
The Board can also engage and confirm the appointments of employees of the scheme to ensure its effective management, whilst the general assembly, the highest decision-making body, can appoint and fix allowances of board members.
The acting Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Bawku, Mr Abdul Rahman Gumah, called on the Board members to be transparent and accountable in the discharge of their duties to sustain the plan. He said government was determined to bring quality healthcare delivery to the doorstep all Ghanaians.
Mr Gumah cautioned officials of the Scheme against administrative lapses that might jeopardize the MHIS and appealed to individuals, opinion leaders and assembly members to support it. The Manager of the Scheme and a board member, Mr. Salifu Adinga gave the assurance that the group would work hard to justify the confidence reposed in it.
He expressed regret that so far only 14,729 people out of the 300, 000 people in the Municipality have registered with the scheme and a total premium of 56 million cedis collected from contributors. Mr Adinga, however, noted that many people could not register with the scheme because the were poor.
He called on the authorities to provided the scheme with adequate means of transport to facilitate the work of the staff. Mr. Abugri gave the assurance that members would work diligently to ensure the smooth implementation of the plan.
The District Circuit Court Judge, Mr. Alex Owusu-Ofori, swore the Board and General Assembly members into office.
