The Paramount Chief of the Bawku Traditional Area, in the Upper East Region, Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, said at the weekend that with immediate effect, spinning of music cassettes at funerals has been banned in the area. He said spinners and those who hire them would pay a fine of 500,000 cedis when caught in the act.
The Bawku Naba made this known at an emergency meeting of divisional and sub-divisional chiefs of the traditional area that comprises Bawku East and Bawku West Districts.
Naba Azoka, President of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs, said he and his sub-chiefs in the traditional area had unanimously agreed on the ban. He said the decision to impose the ban had become imperative in view of the fact that spinning of so-called modern music at the expense of traditional songs and drumming during funerals led to immoral acts and promiscuity among the youth and this contributed to the spread of HIV/AIDS in the area.
Mr Moses Abare Appiah, Bawku West District Chief Executive, said the District Assembly at its recent meeting deliberated on the issue and fully support the ban.
