Ashaiman, July 21, GNA - Mr Morgan Ayawine, Tema Principal Industrial Relations Officer of the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) of TUC on Tuesday advised hairdressers and beauticians to be mindful of their operations in order not to contribute to transmission of infectious diseases through their activities.
He said the nature of their work, which deals with the human body, required the observation of personal and environmental cleanliness and keeping hygienic working materials.
He gave the advice at the annual Hair Week celebration of the Tema Region of the Ghana Hairdressers and Beauticians Association (GHABA) at Ashaiman, on the theme: "Safe and Healthy Saloon".
Mr Ayawine warned that, in this era of competition they could be thrown out of job if they showed signs of laxity in their profession, since there were many of them nationwide.
There was the need therefore to adhere to the ethics of the profession effectively by changing their working tools such as the towels, combs, pedicure/manicure tools in order to prevent transmission of infections.
He urged them to cultivate cordial relations with their clients especially, foreigners so that they would carry good impressions about the country.
He commended the hairdressers for the formation of the association and said its contribution to the socio-economic growth of the nation could not be overemphasised, adding that, no nation could thrive without the informal sector, which contributed about 70 per cent of the economy. Mrs Mercy Nketia Akromah, National Secretary of the GHABA said the executives were embarking on saloon inspection to ensure that members complied with the association's rules and regulations, such as sterilisation of their working tools.
Activities planned to mark the week include float through the principal streets of Ashaiman, saloon inspection, excursion to Ninash Company, beach party and church service. 21 July 04
