Begoro (E/R), Oct. 1, GNA - Licensed chemical and pharmacy shops in Begoro and its environs in the Eastern Region have been asked to increase their stock of condoms and contraceptives during this year's Odwira festival in Begoro.

The Chairman of the Southern Zone of the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG), Mr. Anthony Koranteng Akwafo, who made the appeal on Friday, said this would help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and unwanted pregnancies.

He led officials of Koforidua Branch of PPAG, Ministry of Health, Fanteakwa District Assembly and the District AIDS Committee to interact with owners and shop keepers of the licensed chemical and pharmacy shops to remind them of the need to increase their condom stocks. Mr Akwafo observed that such festivities were often characterised by merry making and attracted many people to the town, and there was the need to prevent the spread of Sexually Transmitted Diseases. Ms Helen Osei, of the Fanteakwa District AIDS Committee, said the interaction would be extended to hotels and guest houses at Begoro and surrounding communities.

Fanteakwa District Chief Executive, Mr Abass Fuseini Sbaabe called on the people in the area to change their sexual habits to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. He said the District Assembly was educating the people on HIV/AIDS and said the Assembly would collaborate with groups working to prevent the spread of the disease implement HIV/AIDS programmes.
