Bekwai (Ash), March 20, GNA - This year's Amansie East Best Teacher's and Non-teaching Staff Awards day has been held at Bekwai with a call on the general public to motivate and support teachers to give of their best to help create the manpower resources needed for national development.

Five colour television sets, four ghetto blasters and two sewing machines worth 18 million cedis were given to the award winners. Mr Daniel K. Obeng, the District Director of Education, who addressed the ceremony on the theme, "Quality Teachers and Educational Workers for Quality Education", said the bottom line of the awards scheme is an essential element in search of excellence.

This, he said is corroborated by the scheme's strategic objective, which is to improve quality of teaching styles and thereby improve pupil/student achievements and education in general.

"We need to prove our worth as teachers and workers to help our children who pass through our hands rise above us", he added. Mr Obeng said the award winners have worked hard to merit the awards and the fact that a teacher can be spotted and selected in a remote area to receive an award on merit is a pointer to how fair the selection process has been.

Mr J.W.K. Barfi of the Bekwai Presbyterian Primary School was adjudged the best primary school teacher and took home a 20-inch colour television.

Miss Justina Agyei also of Bekwai Experimental JSS won the JSS category and also had a colour television set, while Mr Abdul Rahman of Jacobu Secondary/Technical School won the general award and had a colour television set.

Mr John Turkson of Bekwai SDA Secondary School also had a television set for being the best SSS science teacher.

For the non-teaching staff awards, Mr Phillip Tuffour of SDA SSS had a television set and Mr Frank Amankwah of Jacobu SSS took home a ghetto blaster.

Mrs Diana Hammond, the District Co-ordinating Director, congratulated the award winners for the good work done and hinted that the assembly will assist teaching and learning in the district by providing teacher's places of abode. - GNA
