A Former Bishop of the Methodist Church, Kumasi Diocese, Bishop Prof. Sarfo Kantanka, has launched a transformational leadership agenda in Kumasi.
The leadership drive which is named 'Bishop Kantanka Transformation And Leadership Institute (BKTLI), is aimed at training good future leaders of this country who will act without corruption and greediness.
It also aims at eradicating the perception that building a nation is solely the responsibility of leaders, hence, always relying on them for survival.
Speaking during the launch, Bishop Sarfo Kantanka disclosed that it was very worrying that Ghanaians usually complain of bad leadership vis-a-vis corruption, bad governance, greediness among others, but, are failing to address the issue as it keeps persisting.
According to him, for the country to be able to eradicate such behaviours of greed, selfishness, and corruption among leaders, there is the need to start from somewhere. His target for the BKTLI which is mainly the young people, is therefore aimed at inculcating into them the need to understand why they may be called to serve.
Apart from being called to serve, the project also aims at guiding people on the need to contribute their quota to the development of the nation and not necessarily waiting to hold positions before.
"We need a new type of leadership. Leadership that helps mobilize the country to make it a success. So far as I'm concerned, if you take traditional, political and even religious leadership in Ghana, people mostly have the conviction that they have to wait for others to do it for us. Most of these impressions are usually created by our politicians."
According to him, it was time the country shifted from the idea that possibilities are solely made by leaders. He also entreated leaders especially the political class to desist from always creating impressions that they are the sole agents of capabilities especially, during the campaign period despite knowing that all those promises are a fallacy.
He said dependency syndrome has been the major cause of Ghana's unending sufferings in terms of development and other goodies, and it was time every citizen fight to eradicate those impressions.
"It's time we get people who think differently from these perceptions, hence, the Bishop Kantanka Transformation And Leadership Institute initiative," he said.
According to him, for Ghana to be able to change the narrative, there was the need to start with the children who are the future leaders so that they can have a change of impossibility mindset to a possible mindset.
"You just saw students from the various second-cycle institutions during the launch. The dream is to start with these young ones at the basic and second cycle levels," Bishop Kantanka revealed.
He emphatically stated that the project does not aim to influence anyone into a religious denomination, and said, all young people within the aforementioned age brackets qualify.
"I want to state emphatically that the dream is never to influence anyone into a certain religious denomination, even though we aim to guide them into good behaviour for quality leadership."
On his part, former Director General and Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, Professor Stephen Adei who was the guest speaker during the programme commended Bishop Sarfo Kantanka for his great initiative.
According to the respected Ghanaian economist, there is the need to put a God-fearing spirit into people, irrespective of their religious affiliations, so that they can deliver without greediness and selfishness.
He said, apart from the God-fearing spirit, there was the need to change the mindset of people to make it a positive one.
Describing the transformational leadership call as a good one, Prof. Adei said it was time Ghana prioritizes these acts in both spiritual and physical so that our perceptions and narratives will change as a nation.
