Piina (UW), July 30, GNA- Most Reverend Paul Bemile, Catholic Bishop of the Wa Diocese on Sunday advised people to spend their leisure time in reading to acquire more knowledge, rather than wasting it on "pito" and other alcoholic beverages.
"I am sorry to say this, but how many of you actually find time to read newspapers, books or other materials that could increase your knowledge in other fields? Unless you read, some of you literates will end up becoming stale and dangerous to society".
Bishop Bemile gave this advice when he inaugurated a GH=A2 30,000 (300 million cedis) Library at Piina in the Jirapa/Lambussie District. He said until they committed some time for reading they would not have the opportunity to educate the younger ones in society. The Library was funded by the Tingan family based in Belgium in collaboration with the Foundation for Rural Education, Empowerment and Development (FREED) Nandom based Non- Governmental Organization. The library has a wide range of books on many subjects and were supplied Dr. Alexis Tingan, a native of Piina who is married to a Belgian.
The Catholic Bishop urged teachers to compel their students to use the Library and advised them against alcoholism, which had become a silent killer, particularly in the rural areas of the region. "The level at which alcoholism among the youth and adults has risen in the region is so alarming that its only you the teachers and parents who can help reverse the trend, and I have the confidence that you are capable of doing that", he said.
Mr. Justin Dakorah, Jirapa/Lambussie District Chief Executive, said the Assembly had ordered the purchase of one thousand high- tension electricity poles to extend electricity to Piina Senior Secondary School and the entire township.
He said the Assembly had already constructed a Clinic and has also initiated an afforestation programme, and appealed to the people to collaborate effectively with the Assembly to come out with more development projects.
