The Bole District Directorate of Education has demoted a number of head teachers at various schools in the district for non-performance.
It has also caused suspension of payment of salaries to some teachers as well as paid back the salaries of others in the district to the government chest for various offences including consistent absenteeism and vacation of post without permission.
Ms Leocadia Zakpala, Bole District Director of Education, disclosed this at the 56th Independence Day parade of school pupils and students of selected schools, which was staged at the compound of Saint Kizito Primary "A'' School at Bole in the Northern Region on Wednesday.
Alhaji Sampson Seidu Abudu, Bole District Chief Executive, flanked by Ms Zakpala and the Bole District Police Commander, took the salute of the parade.
Awards in the form of motorbikes, coloured television sets and roofing sheets were presented to schools that excelled during the march past.
Ms Zakpala said some of the school children in the district had also been patronizing music jams and other entertainment events, especially in the night at the expense of learning.
She said: "The indiscipline among pupils and teachers alike is not making things any better," adding this among other factors had led to a drop in education standards in the district.
Other challenges cited by the District Director of Education included poor textbook situation, inadequate classrooms, and low supervision because of no dependable means of transport, children watching television, others engaged in commercial activities deep into the night, whiles the rest were overwhelmed by household chores.
She said even though government had assisted the district in terms of providing more classroom facilities, a lot more needed to be done to reduce congestion in the existing schools.
Ms Zakpala, therefore, appealed to parents to exercise a high level of supervision on their children at home to enable them make good use of their time.
Alhaji Seidu Abudu called on all to put the past behind them and move ahead, especially since the nation’s general elections were over in order for them to perform their duties and responsibilities diligently.
He said: "It is only when we come together with good ideas that we can collectively move this country to another level where the lives of our people could be improved."
The District Chief Executive, who cited a number of ongoing development projects within the district, said "the government is committed to ensuring that good social policies and interventions are put in place to change the lives of the people.
Alhaji Seidu Abudu spoke about the alarming spate of road accidents in the district and appealed to road users to exercise restraint on the roads to save lives.
He thanked the chiefs and people of the district for their support and cooperation leading to improved development in the district.
