Bolga Technical closed down

The Bolgatanga Municipal Director of Education, Mabison Amokasi, has officially closed down the Bolgatanga Technical Institute following a students’ riot and threats over the weekend.

The students had boycotted breakfast, lunch and supper served on Saturday, May 30, and threatened to damage school property in protest against what they termed, the school authority’s failure to protect the occupants of the boys’ dormitory from falling from the top floor of the building.

A DAILY GUIDE source at the school said at dawn Saturday when students were fast asleep, someone screamed “fire-fire!” and in an attempt by the students to run away from danger, three boys fell from the top floor of the three-storey building.

Two of them who sustained injuries were admitted at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital on Saturday and the one, who was in a critical condition, was transferred to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for advanced care.

According to the source, the students had complained about the decayed metal bars at the edge of the corridor in front of the rooms and yet nothing had been done to replace them and fix some at areas that do not have.

There had been two similar accidents in the past, which resulted in serious students’ protests and damages, especially after the second accident, when a student lost his life. What happened Saturday incensed the students to get the school authorities to take action to forestall a future reoccurrence.

The Principal of the Institute, Thomas Abare, told DAILY GUIDE that management of the school was to meet the Municipal Director of Education yesterday to discuss the situation and when to reopen the school.

According to him, work was being undertaken on the protective barricades and that they would be in place by the time the students come back to school.
