A book on “Strategic Management - Concepts and Analysis,” written by Professor George Gyan-Baffour, Member of Parliament for Wenchi, would be launched on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at the British Council in Accra.

The book relies extensively on state-of-the-art presentations of seasoned authors in the subject and integrates the concepts into a simple coherent book easily understood by students and practitioners alike.

The book, to be launched by Very Rev. Prof. S. K. Adjepong, Principal of Methodist University College Ghana, is divided into three parts, a statement signed by the Author and copied to the Ghana News Agency said.

Part I focuses on Strategy Formulation; part II focuses on Strategy Implementation; Monitoring, Evaluation and Control, while part III shows how the concepts, which mainly apply to for-profit organisations, can be adapted to not-for-profit organisations including NGOs and Government institutions.

“The book is about strategic management of organisations. Strategic Management is the art of decision-making involving the formulation, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and control of business plans and actions needed to realise organisational objectives and the continuous correction and improvement of those plans and actions,” it said.

The statement said the study of strategic management involved the mastery of the concepts and techniques used by managers in scanning and predicting the environment.

“It involves techniques for formulating and implementing strategies that use the available internal competencies to take advantage of or adapt to the external environmental changes to realise organisational objectives”.

Strategic management includes the mastery of knowledge sets that are used to monitor, evaluate and prescribe corrective measures when necessary to control the strategy implementation process to ensure that expected outcomes are achieved.

The statement said developing and implementing a strategy allowed managers to exercise more control over the firm's direction and to chart a course that enhanced the firm's performance.

Prof. Gyan-Baffour is currently a Member of Parliament (MP) for Wenchi.

He taught Strategic Management, Organisational Behaviour, Labour Management Relations, and Principles of Management at Virginia State University, Petersburg, Virginia in the USA between August 1992 and December 1993.

From January 1994 to July 2002 he was a Professor of Management at Howard University in Washington DC. He taught Strategic Management, Organisational Behaviour, Business and Society, and Seminar in Management.
