Borstal institute gets support

Accra, April 19, GNA -The Men of Vision and Evangelism, men's group of the Harvest Chapel International on Saturday presented aqua-tabs, food items and a satellite television decoder and accessories valued at GH¢ 2000 to the Borstal Institute of the Ghana Prisons. The Rev. Edwards Randolph-Koranteng, President of the group said the donation formed part of activities marking a week-long celebration of the group and also to share and interact with the inmates.

He said the Church had recognized the need to reach out to the poor and needy to give them a meaningful life.

"The group will also find out the needs of the Institute and discuss ways of assisting. We will propose the adoption of a hall to be branded to cement our relationship", he said.

Rev. Koranteng noted that the leadership of the group would liaise with officers of the institute to access the needs of the inmates in order to provide relevant services in that regard. Mr. Kwame Kuma Kpeli, Assist Director of Prisons, who received the items expressed appreciation to the group for their collaborative effort of bringing hope, joy and relief to the less privileged in society.

He said the Institute, since January 2006 had introduced a polished up and attachment programmes for inmates in the vocational sector through the support of some NGOs and banks. Mr Kpeli noted that some of the workshops, which had been in existence for over 50 years needed total rehabilitation. The Borstal Institute is a correctional facility for children under 18 years who commit one social vice or the other.
