The Builsa District in the Upper East Region is sponsoring 108 teacher trainees in various teacher training institutions with a budget of GH? 13,700.
Mr Norbert Awulley, District Chief Executive, said this at a public forum organised on Wednesday to sensitise the public on government policies and programmes and development activities embarked on since 2009.
He said out of 1351 candidates presented for the Basic Education Certificate examination (BECE), 700 students gained admission to various Senior High Schools.
Mr Awulley said it represented 52.1 per cent, making the District the first in the region and the 81st in ranking nationwide.
Mr Awulley noted that, with the provision of 10,500 dual desks from the Ghana Education Trust fund, distribution of 218,673 exercise books, 13,336 school uniforms and the provision of 124 laptop computers, there would be tremendous improvement in education in the district.
In the area of health, he said an amount of GH?4,300 in 2011, was earmarked to support 30 student nurses comprising five community health nurses, 20 general nurses, five health assistant trainees and six other medical students to help provide quality health care delivery in the district.
Mr Awulley said the assembly is constructing a magistrate court and a traditional council hall and offices to provide an alternative dispute resolution structure to support the court system.
He said the district had benefited from GH?2,339,000 towards financing the Labour Intensive Public Works component of the Ghana Social Opportunity Project over a five year period.
Mr Mark Woyongo, Regional Minister said the creation of the Builsa South District would bring development in the area.
He said the new district would benefit from the construction of an $18 million millennium village that includes West Mamprusi.
Mr Woyongo said the area would be a beneficiary of the Sisile Irrigation Scheme to encourage dry season gardening and ultimately reduce poverty.
He appealed to the chiefs and people to participate in the biometric registration process, which would commence this month.
He cautioning them to discourage and expose foreigners who would come into the country to register and subsequently vote in the December polls.
Mr Woyongo reiterated government’s commitment to ensure free and fair elections devoid of acrimony and violence.
He called for reconciliation and unity among National Democratic Congress party faithful.
