Twabidi (Ash), Aug 21, GNA- The Ahafo-Ano North District of Ashanti has from 2000 to date, recorded 157 Buruli Ulcer cases, Mrs Elizabeth Danso, the acting District Director of Health Services, has said.

She said those affected are mostly children from six to 12 years. Speaking at a durbar at Twabidi near Tepa in Ashanti on Wednesday to educate the people on Buruli Ulcer and how to prevent its spread, Mrs Danso said the first 42 cases of the disease were recorded in the district in 1996 at Bosokese and Achinakrom.

She appealed to chiefs, assembly members and Community Surveillance Volunteers to assist in identifying people with the disease and who fail to report to the hospital authorities for treatment. Mrs Danso said the District Health Management Team (DHMT) has stepped up its outreach education programme on buruli ulcer in the district to sensitise the people to report cases to the nearest hospital for treatment.

Mr Akwasi Adu-Poku, the Ahafo-Ano North District Chief Executive, expressed grave concern about the increase of the disease in the district.

He said the District Assembly has committed 15 million cedis to the programme. Nana Adomako Nyame, chief of Twabidi, thanked the health personnel and the district assembly for the durbar to educate the people to pay serious attention to the disease. He later gave out four rooms to the Ministry of Health to be used as a clinic. 21 Aug. 03
