Bongo, (UE), Dec.19, GNA- The Chief of Bongo, Naba Baba Salifu Alemeyerom on Tuesday expressed concern at the indiscriminate bush burning in the Bongo District, saying it was denying many people access to thatch and animal feed.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview, he called on District Assemblies to see to it that laws passed on bush burning were strictly enforced to avert the trend.

He pointed out that unless District Assemblies strictly enforced by-laws on bush burning and people caught made to face the law, they would continue to burn the bush. He said he and his elders had instituted punitive measures for bush burning offenders and said any body caught in the act was made to pay a fixed amount on the spot.

Naba Alemeyarom said that would help reduce bush burning in his area and called on other chiefs in the region to institute similar punitive measures. When the GNA interviewed some animal farmers in the Districts, they reiterated the need for the Assembly to make sure environmental by-laws were strictly implemented to deter offenders.
