Businessman calls on IGP to probe Wenchi Police

Mr Kwadwo Agyei, a businessman in the Techiman Municipality, has appealed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to probe the Wenchi Divisional Police command over 441 motorbikes missing in their custody.

Mr Agyei, who is the National Agent of the STE Evame SARL Company limited, Togo-based international company urged the Police administration to set up independent committee to investigate the matter.

He told newsmen in Techiman that the company deals in motorbikes and spare parts and had branches in Tamale, Ho, Techiman and Tema and in 2012 imported about 500 motorbikes into the country.

Mr Agyei said the company through its General Manager, Mr Emile Meto contracted Messrs Jacob Agongo and Alhassan Issaku, both Techiman-based motorbike dealers to sell the machines.

He said it was detected during a routine check that other motor dealers in the area had sold some of the bikes but failed to account to them.

Mr Agyei said the company reported the matter to the Divisional Police command which subsequently arrested and granted the suspects police enquiry bail.

He said the police however took inventory and seized 441 of the remaining motorbikes from the motor dealers and kept the bikes in custody for investigations to continue.

Mr Agyei expressed regret that since then the police had failed to prosecute the suspects, and also restore the motor bikes to the company.

“This is why we are appealing to the IGP, the police council and even President John Dramani Mahama to as a matter of urgency compel the Wenchi divisional police command to facilitate the prosecution of the suspects and restore the motorbikes to the company,” Mr Agyei added.

When contacted Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Gyan Kyere, the Wenchi Divisional Police Commander confirmed the story but he however added that the incident occurred before he assumed leadership.

Efforts to contact Deputy Superintendent of Police Vincent Adogo, the Divisional Crime Officer, whom according to ACP Kyere, is handling the case, was unsuccessful.
