A 32-year-old businessman, Seidu Gabunu, resident at Salaga in the East Gonja District of the Northern Region, has appeared before the Tamale Circuit Court, charged with raping a 12-year-old school girl.

He pleaded not guilty and was remanded to appear again on April 24.

Police Inspector Paul Oppong told the court that on July 19, last year, at about 0800 hours, a witness in the case saw Gabunu pulling the girl into his room.

The witness then suspected that something fishy was going on between them so she rushed to the girl's parents and reported the matter to them.

Inspector Oppong said when the witness together with the girl's parents arrived at the accused person's house, he had locked the door to his room.

They knocked several times at the door but the accused refused to open the door but when the knocking was intensified the accused opened the door for the girl to come out.

Prosecutor Oppong said when the girl came out her parents rushed to the Salaga Police Station and reported the matter.

When the Police arrested him, Gabunu denied having sexual intercourse with the girl. However, the girl confessed that, that had been the second time the accused had an affair with her.

Inspector Oppong said medical examination showed that the girl's hymen was broken and some whitish discharge was found in her private part.
