Cape Coast, July 19, GNA- The Central region branch of the United Nations Association-Ghana (UNA-GH), on Saturday congratulated President John Agyekum Kufour for his elevation to the chairmanship of the Security Council of the African Union (AU) and ECOWAS.

They also recognised the honour done Ghana by the elevation of Mr Kofi Annan to the Secretary General of the United Nations and suggested that a Library complex and children's park should be constructed in his honour.

These were contained in a resolution adopted at the end of the Central Region UNA-GH congress held at Cape Coast at the weekend. The theme was "Developing the Rule of Law".

Members called on the UN to ensure that the rule of law was upheld among nations and congratulated the United States for her efforts to ensure peace and security throughout the world.

They appealed to the UN to embark on worldwide sensitisation programmes on how to promote and sustain the rule of law throughout the world.

They also called on AU member states to sacrifice economically to make the Union viable and also put in place structures to make it possible for citizens of member countries to interact more among themselves.

On the forthcoming general elections, they appealed to the Electoral Commission to consider itself as a model for peace and fairness and conduct the elections in the interest of fair play.

The Association called on candidates who would be contesting in the elections to comport themselves when they mount platforms, and that, religious leaders, and traditional rulers offer advice to all Ghanaians to be tolerant.

Members resolved to collaborate with traditional authorities, district assemblies, MPs, and opinion leaders to address chieftaincy disputes, land litigations, street child problems, human rights violation, child labour, drug abuse, poverty, HIV/AIDS, indiscipline and environmental degradation in order to promote and sustain peace, stability and development.

They pledged to form UNA-GH clubs at second cycle institutions, use the mass media, seminars and workshops to sensitise the public on the objectives and goals of the UNA-GH.
