CBRDP Releases Funds for Upper West Projects

Wa, Nov 15, GNA- Community-Based Rural Development Project (CBRDP) has, under the Infrastructure for Agricultural Development and Infrastructure for Human Development components released a total of 11.1billion cedis for all the eight district Assemblies in the Upper West Region to undertake development projects.

Apart from that, another 3 billion cedis has been released to 20 Area Councils in the Region to undertake projects of their choice in their various communities.

Mr. Anthony Boateng, Regional Institutions Development Specialist (RIDS) who disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Wa on Tuesday said Sissala East and West Districts received 184.9 thousand dollars each , 164.4 thousand each for Wa East and West Districts and 168.5 thousand dollars for the Nadowli District. He said Jirapa/Lambussie District received 164.8 thousand dollars, Lawra District received 132.3 thousand dollars, whilst Wa Municipal received the least of 70.4 thousand dollars for their various projects under the two components.

Mr. Boateng said 20 Area Councils were each given 150 million cedis to carry out projects of their choice which got to the total of three billion cedis, adding that four Councils in Nadowli district, three each in the Sissala East and West Districts and two each in the Wa Municipal, Wa West and Wa East, Jirapa/Lambussie and Lawra districts were benefiting from the facility. The Specialist said the programme, apart from releasing funds for development projects would also help activate most of the Area Councils that were hitherto dormant in the system. "We shall in our small way strengthen the grassroot democracy by constantly building the capacity of the people at the area council and unit committee levels"

He said under the Community-Based Natural Resource Management component, his outfit had identified five watersheds in the region for rehabilitation out of which he had already sensitized the people of Piina in the Jirapa/Lambussie district and Gwollu in the Sissala West District on the need to protect and conserve the watersheds to ensure regular flow of water and effective use of water resources. Mr. Boateng said the project, which would support Regional offices, District Assemblies, and rural communities was being sponsored by the World Bank, Agence Francaise de Development and the Ghana Government. He appealed to beneficiary assemblies and communities to make judicious use of the facility in their various locations for the benefit of the general public.
