The Centre for Environmental Protection and Natural Resources (CEPNR), an environmental NGO, has commended the government for launching the National Sanitation Campaign aimed at confronting the challenges of vegetation.

A statement issued by Ms. Abena Yamoah, Coordinator of the NGO at the weekend and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, said CEPNR acknowledged the enormity of filth and the difficulties most communities were facing in the disposal of refuse.

“This calls for massive mobilization of resources to deal with the major issues facing our environment and expects the support of Ghanaians to embrace the government intervention by co-operating with the stakeholders to ensure it success.

“Since epidemics have no limits and know not partisan politics, we (CEPNR) expects this exercise to be devoid of partisan politics and will advise the citizenry to fully participate whenever they are invited to take up …the educational and clean-up campaigns.

“In this direction CEPNR is going to team up with stakeholders on a nationwide programme to fumigate major drains and refuse dumps to augment the efforts of the government to meet Ghana’s objective of achieving the Millennium Development Goal on Environment,” the statement said.

It observed that some sanitation companies as well as districts, municipal and metropolitan assemblies were not facilitating clean environment as a result of poor supervision of the process, leading to waste from desilted drains left in the open, whilst refuse dumps are not fumigated and serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

As part of efforts to sustain the programme for cleaner Ghana, CEPNR has expressed commitment to monitor and report on the activities of all the stakeholders to support the agenda.

CEPNR aims at halting the incidence of malaria and other major diseases and other issues affecting the environment.

President John Dramani Mahama launched the environmental programme on Thursday September 13, 2012.
