Nkoranza (B/A) Jan. 20 GNA - Ms Joyce Nyamadie, Nkoranza District Director of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has commended the people in the District for patronizing the activities of the Commission.
Briefing Ghana News Agency at Nkoranza on the activities of the Commission last year Ms Nyamadie noted that most people whose rights were infringed upon by other people trooped to the CHRAJ Office for the necessary advice.
The District office thus recorded a total number of 272 complaints during the year under review as against 232 in 2002, she added. In a breakdown, the district director said 110 cases on child maintenance were recorded, 22 on paternity, 21 for child custody and 33 on marriage.
The office received twenty-three cases on inheritance, 13 on maintenance of spouses and concubine compensation, while two reports were received on tenancy and 48 for other complaints. One hundred and forty eight of the complaints were settled amicably, Ms Nyamadie added.
She expressed appreciation for the people's increased patronage of the commission's activities and attributed this to the educational campaign programmes embarked on by the office in the communities, on FM stations and in churches.
The CHRAJ Director advised parents to maintain their children well as they are their greatest assets.
Miss Nyamadie expressed concern about the denial of some men for pregnancies and noted that such cases were increasing at an alarming rate in the district. The office recorded 22 of them last year. Women should be very faithful to their sex partners and stop having multiple male partners, she advised, saying this was a reason why men denied their pregnancies and children.
Miss Nyamadie urged the Government to offer training courses for CHRAJ officials to enhance their activities and also to improve their salaries and working conditions to sustain their interests in the work. She appealed for vehicles for the district offices to enable the staff to reach the people at their doorsteps to educate them on their rights and responsibilities to enhance national development.
The Government should also do well to provide decent accommodation for police stations as some of them are really in deplorable state, the district director said and called on Nkoranza District Assembly to help improve facilities at Busunya and Akuma Police Stations.
Miss Nyamadie expressed gratitude to the District Assembly for offering financial and logistic support towards CHRAJ activities and commended Radio BAR in Sunyani, Asta FM and Classic FM stations at Techiman as well as Jerryson FM station at Nkoranza for giving CHRAJ free airtime for public educational programmes. 20 JAN. 04
