In a groundbreaking initiative led by the Centre for Local Governance Advocacy (CLGA), plastic waste in Adentan Municipality is now being transformed into a valuable resource through the Adentan Waste to Wages Project (ADWAWA).

This innovative approach not only addresses environmental challenges but also uplifts the community economically.

Gladys G. N. Tetteh, Deputy Executive Director of CLGA, emphasized the significant impact of the ADWAWA project during an inter-district sharing forum.

"Gone are the days when plastic waste was considered valueless," she declared. "Today, we are turning a challenge into a benefit for our community," she told the media.

She explained that the project is designed to combat plastic pollution plaguing Adentan with a focus on recycling plastic waste into reusable materials.

"It aims to reduce environmental degradation caused by discarded bottles and bags while creating employment opportunities and additional income streams for residents."

"We saw an opportunity to not only clean our streets and water bodies but also to create jobs and improve living standards," Tetteh explained.

The project involves comprehensive community engagement through media campaigns, social networks, and local meetings to educate residents about recycling benefits.

Key to the initiative are segregation bins placed strategically across electoral areas and convenient collection points.

Collected plastics are transported to a state-of-the-art recycling facility equipped with advanced machinery capable of processing various types of plastic waste.

These technologies enable the conversion of plastics into raw materials for new products, such as construction materials, pillows, handbags, and household goods.

Tetteh urged other Metropolitan and Municipal assemblies present at the forum to adopt and replicate this successful model in their districts.

"Our doors are open to share our experiences and support others in establishing similar recycling centers," she affirmed.

The Adentan Waste to Wages Project exemplifies a shift towards sustainable development and circular economy principles, offering a blueprint for effective plastic waste management nationwide.
