Tamale, Nov. 24, GNA - Canada has, over the past seven years, spent 7.5 million dollars to train environmental health officers in the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions under the District Capacity Building Project (DISCAP).
The project has so far trained 100 district environmental health officers and hygiene educators at the Tamale School of Hygiene. Dr. Chris Brown, Canadian Team Leader of DISCAP, said this during the fifth intake of students for the DISCAP/School of Hygiene training programme in Tamale on Wednesday.
He said part of the funds had been used to provide equipment for the Institute of Local Government Studies in Tamale as well as Tamale and Bolgatanga polytechnics.
Dr Brown said the project would wind up this year and urged the district assemblies in the three northern regions to continue to support it. Mr. Philip Anladomo Kwaku Zori, the Principal of the Tamale School of Hygiene, appealed to district assemblies in the Northern Region to develop a stronger partnership with the school. He said the DISCAP/School of Hygiene Project would assist in putting into action concepts such as hygiene education as well as environmental health and water and sanitation promotion in the rural communities.
