Obuasi, (Ash) May 24, GNA - Mr Johnny Owusu-Boadi, Obuasi Municipal Director of Education, has said that enforcing discipline in schools does not necessitate only the caning of pupils.
His administration would, therefore, not be charitable with teachers fond of using the cane unnecessarily on school children.
This was contained in a speech read for him at the second graduation ceremony of Steadfast Academy at Obuasi. Mr Owusu-Boadi pointed out that the Ghana Education Service (GES) has a policy on caning and asked that teachers should make sure they adhered strictly to this.
"Discipline and the Fear of God - The bedrock for Academic Excellence" was the theme for the event.
The Municipal Education Director also reminded parents of their responsibility to provide guidance, control and to train their children to be God-fearing.
Mr John Alexander Ackon, the Municipal Chief Executive, said discipline was cardinal to the development of young ones.
"It is, therefore, important that we imbibe in our youth, values and attitudes that will enable them to grow up into patriotic and dedicated citizens to support the development of the nation," he said.
He urged the school authorities and pupils to continue to strive towards the achievement of high academic performance. The proprietress, Mrs Evelyn Sintim-Amankwa, advised the students to always reflect on the virtues of discipline and the fear of God, which had been the foundation of their training in the school for the nine years.
