Cape Coast, Dec 29, GNA- The Cape Coast Municipal Assembly has begun acquiring land with a view to establishing land banks to aid potential investors.
About 122 plots valued at 244 million cedis have been acquired and part payment of 100 million cedis made to four families from whom the land was acquired.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Muniru Arafat Nuhu who was addressing the third ordinary meeting of the assembly on Monday, said the remaining amount would be paid by the second quarter of next year. He expressed his unhappiness about the assembly's poor local revenue generation and said as at October 31, the assembly realised 1.3 billion cedis, as against a targeted amount of 2.5 billion cedis.
On the District Assemblies Common Fund, Mr Nuhu said 4.710 billion cedis was allocated to the assembly and that it has received 4,065 billion cedis for the first three quarters.
He said the assembly also received 1.5 billion cedis under phases one and two of the HIPC programmes and that the money was used to put up a clinic, three school projects and toilets in some communities.
Mr Nuhu said all the projects being executed under the phase two of the EU projects were progressing and that eight new projects have been approved to be undertaken in the municipality under the third phase of the programme.
He said waste management in the municipality had improved due to the receipt of 10 refuse containers from the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development under the HIPC relief programme.
Mr Nuhu expressed concern about how solid waste disposal is offered free and described it as a big drain on the assembly's resources and proposed that as from next year, each household be levied 2,000 cedis a month for refuse collection.
On the next year's general election, Mr Nuhu appealed to supporters of political parties not to engage in any acts that could lead to the breach of the peace in the municipality.
