About 146 students and pre-tertiary students of Manya Krobo have benefitted from a day’s career seminar held at the Kpong Presbyterian church in the Eastern region.
The seminar organized by Dr. Winfred Baah, a Consultant Physician at the Department of Medicine at the Korle Bu Teaching hospital was aimed at grooming young people, primarily Senior High School and pre-tertiary students who want to pursue various courses at the tertiary level on strategies to gain admissions into the country’s tertiary institutions.
The participants were taken through various topics including choice of school, guidance on choosing courses, scholarship application, etc.
“We decided to put this program together to help the upcoming ones, the young ones who want to pursue various courses in the various tertiary institutions so we can help them prepare for it in terms of preparing them for interviews, in choice of schools, in terms of courses, etc”, said Dr. Baah.
A lot of financially challenged students remain ignorant of various scholarship opportunities but Dr. Winfred Baah said the seminars would guide and direct students on various scholarship and support prospects which they could explore.
The astute doctor who expressed satisfaction at the attendance and participation said the program aside its aforementioned objectives would also support successful applicants through mentorship before enrolling in school through their courses till they are gainfully employed.
Career choices have remained a difficult area for many students, often resulting in students’ limited knowledge on the choice of courses they want to pursue, a challenge the Consultant Physician said would be addressed by the seminar.
“Some people need guidance to choose courses”, Dr. Baah averred. “Those who do science, all they think about is medicine, being a doctor or being a nurse and probably being a lab person but there are so many courses you can do if you did science”.
With the long term goal of the program being geared towards raising champions, beneficiaries of the program which is expected to be held twice in a year would equally offer mentorship to other students.
