Catholic University holds matriculation ceremony

Sunyani Nov 7, GNA - Nana Kwadwo Seinti, Brong Ahafo Regional Minister on Saturday expressed regret about the behaviour of some students at university campuses.

He said some students enter the university with a humble character but turn to copy blindly from their friends, who think they have all the wisdoms in the world.

Nana Seinti expressed the sentiment when addressing students of the Catholic University of Ghana at their third matriculation ceremony in Sunyani.

One hundred and four men and women were admitted for the academic year to offer courses

on Information and Communication Science and Technology, Religion and Economic and Business Administration.

He said, the tertiary schools are training points of a first class labour force of the nation and preparing the youth for the future. You should not only be proud of holding a certificate but also seek to acquire knowledge, which could be applied at your workplaces, he added.

He entreated the students to be submissive and obey the schools rule of law and regulations to achieve their visions. He emphasized that every useful Ghanaian is the one who respects the rule of law and advised the students to respect time and be committed to their studies.

The Minister commended the Catholic Church for its support in all their endeavours to promote economic needs, health services, education and other human activities, adding that it shows a good partnership between the government and the church.

Most Reverend Matthew Akwasi Gyamfi, Bishop of the Sunyani Catholic Diocese urged the students to take advantage of their chance in the university to learn hard to develop themselves for the future.

He asked the students to always remember that, seeking knowledge for its own sake has no value or impact unless the knowledge could be applied to real life situations, adding that knowledge could be dangerous if there are no guidelines as to how that knowledge should be used.

"There is therefore the need to be disciplined, seek God's guidance and inspirations in your quest for knowledge to have a proper framework on how your knowledge acquired could be used," he said. He noted that the future aspirations of the country are reflected on the prevailing conditions in its universities with respect to discipline and morality of the students.

Father Michael J.Schulthgeis, President of the University said the aim of the university is to provide students with quality educational to the higher level, to help them understand issues and to provide them with ethical and moral values for their life journey.

It was also to equip them with skills to enable them to meet the challenges of a rapid changing socio- economic and political environment.

He said hard work is essential to success and urged the students to be men and women of great desires to realize their dreams. He stressed that the world needs people of competence, conscience and commitment whose hearts are moved by the values of integrity and compassion to the transformation of the society.

Reverend Father Albert A.Kuuire, Registrar announced that the university has introduced a night programme to give chance to interested and capable candidates who are already in the workforce to obtain a Bachelor's Degree in Economics and Business Administration. The Registrar administered the matriculation oath.
