Sunyani, Dec 26, GNA- The Right Reverend Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, Catholic Bishop of Sunyani, on Thursday night commended Journalists in the Brong Ahafo for their exemplary pioneering role in the development of the Region.
He was speaking at a buffet dinner the Catholic Secretariat organised for Media Practitioners in Sunyani.
The Bishop acknowledged the painstaking efforts of Journalists in the performance of their duties and expressed the hope that they would continue to spearhead the crusade to get the people well informed about development issues and their mobilisation for the implementation of Government policies.
Bishop Gyamfi, who was consecrated as the Second Bishop of the Sunyani Diocese early this year, however, entreated Journalists to exercise circumspection in their reportage of events and on issues "since we need a united people to build our Region and the Nation."
"The Yuletide is a period for all of us to reflect on our activities to correct lapses and to refocus on our goal of helping the Region and the Country to grow to our desire," he said.
The Catholic Bishop appealed to the Government to focus attention on the Region, especially in education, health and industry and said that though the Region was acknowledged as the "bread basket" of the country, it lacked industries that could employ the teeming unemployed youth. "I wish that education in the Region would be greatly enhanced through the GETFund (Ghana Education Trust Fund), so that more of our people, in view of the dismal performance of our schools in examinations, we can get access to quality education and for an improvement in standards", Bishop Gyamfi said.
Mr Charles Koomson, Vice President of the Brong Ahafo Branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), who is also the Regional Manager of the Ghana News Agency (GNA) thanked the Bishop and the Secretariat for the honour and wished for continued cordial relations between Journalists and the Secretariat.
He reiterated the determination of the Regional Press Corps to work assiduously to help to lift the Region to its deserved status.
