"Cemetery" JSS is 10 years old

Ho, March 11, GNA - Located in the vicinity of Mawuli Secondary School and sharing boundaries with the Ho Nurses Training College and the E.P. Church cemetery, Mawuli Junior Secondary School, alias Cemetery JSS, has weathered the storm for the past 10 years to become one of the reputable junior secondary schools in the Ho municipality.

The school started with 15 students and six teachers and had, for the greater part of its formative years, shared classrooms and other facilities with its sister schools, Mawuli Primary and Mawuli Secondary School.

However, through the efforts of the school's Parent Teachers Association (PTA), it now has three blocks of classrooms and teachers' common room to serve a student population of about 534 and 21 teachers.

It is the most populated basic school in the municipality and is among the best in both academic and extra curricular activities in the municipality.

"Cemetery JSS", so called because of its location near a cemetery, Mawuli JSS has been the single regular participant of the Bournvita Brain Watch Quiz competition in the municipality and has over the years represented the municipality in cultural, sports and games and singing competitions.

In the last Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE) rating in the municipality, the school placed 12th in a field 134 schools having fielded the highest number of 171 candidates in the municipality, 158 (91 percent) of who were successful.

"Cemetery" J.S.S, 10 years old and Mawuli Primary School, 25 years this year, are walking "hand in hand" in pulling resources towards celebrating their joint birthdays.

Mr Frank Denakpor, Headmaster of Mawuli JSS told the GNA in an interview that the celebration has become necessary because chalking 10 and 25 years, the two institutions were no mean achievements.

He said the purpose of the celebrations is to raise funds for a 100-seat capacity library and the completion of the schools' infrastructure to cater for their ever-increasing demand for admissions. Mr Denakpor said it is also to open the schools to parents and guardians to know what goes on in the schools academically and socially.

The celebration, which will be under the theme: "Basic Education - Cornerstone of National Development", will attract all past students of Mawuli Primary and JSS in July with activities such as clean ups, quizzes, functional displays, route marches, games, durbar and a dinner dance.
