Sekondi, April 29, GNA - Members of Sekondi-Takoradi Chamber of Commerce and Industry have expressed appreciation to the change of Shama Ahanta East Metropolitan Assembly (SAEMA) to Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA).

They contended that it had the prospect of re-opening the area for foreign investment to enhance development. This was contained in a statement issued at Sekondi and jointly signed by Mr James Kainyiah, Chairman and Mr Vincent Annan, Executive Secretary.

It said the twin-city of Sekondi-Takoradi carried with it fond memories of brisk and healthy trade and economic relations with multinational organisations and companies that operated in the Gold Coast for more than 100 years.

"The Chamber therefore commends Government for re-naming the metropolitan assembly to give its true identity to the international community, something we have been advocating for some years now," it added.

The Chamber noted with satisfaction provision of roads, education and sports facilities by Government for the region's accelerated development.

However, it urged Government to provide the necessary infrastructure at the Industrial Free Zone located within the metropolis to attract investors.

"We are afraid that unless this is done, investors would not be willing to investment in the metropolis in spite of the numerous facilities such as the port, railways, airport and energy sources discovered in the area," the statement said.

It called on Government to declare the Takoradi Port an import and export port to make it vibrant and reduce congestion at the Tema port. Creation of Shama District Assembly which was part of Shama Ahanta East Metropolitan Assembly paved the way for the re-naming of Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly.
