Chief calls for division of Dormaa District

Dormaa-Pampaso (B/A) March 1, GNA - Barima Oppong Yaw Boabasa, Chief of Dormaa-Pampaso has added his voice to calls for a split of Dormaa District to accelerate the development of all communities in the district.

Barima Oppong, who is Gyasehene of Dormaa Traditional Council, made the call through the Ghana News Agency at Dormaa-Pampaso. He explained that the huge size of the district and its corresponding number of communities made it cumbersome for effective data collection and efficient distribution of development projects. The chief said most of the settlements in the district were relatively small and were incapable of making any meaningful contribution to revenue generation and this put pressure on the district's share of the District Assemblies Common Fund. Barima Oppong said the situation did not only pose problems to the District Assembly but also impacted negatively on the trend of development and poverty alleviation among the people. He noted that with its current size and number of towns and villages, the district was bound to face difficulties as demand for development projects was made to the Assembly on community rather than on population basis.

The Chief appealed to the government to consider Dormaa district among the next batch of new districts to be created for the steady development of the area. He called on the District Assembly to diversify its methods of revenue mobilization to ensure that all eligible taxpayers were roped in to honour their tax obligations to reduce the reliance on the common fund.
