Chief calls for revision of teaching methods

Apowa (W/R), Nov 25, GNA- Awulae Annor Adjaye III, Paramount Chief of Western Nzema Traditional Area, has called on stakeholders in education to revise existing teaching methods to reverse the poor Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results recorded in many schools in the Western Region.

He expressed regret that students in most public schools in the region could not score good grades to qualify for admission to tertiary institutions.

Awulae Adjaye was speaking at the opening of a two-day workshop for civil society and religious groups, non-government organisations (NGOs), teachers and community leaders, with sponsorship from the Commonwealth Education Fund (CEF).

He said the state of affairs would deprive such districts the required human resources and that some of the children who do not gain admission into the Senior Secondary Schools take to illegal activities.

Mr Donkris Mevuta, Chairman of the Western Regional Network of Non-governmental Organisations (WERENGO), said the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE), is meant to ensure education for all children.

He said politics should be separated from the FCUBE concept to make it feasible.

Mr Charles D. Cobbinah, the Executive Director of Vital International Foundation, appealed to NGOs operating in the region to liase with each other for the smooth implementation of education policies.
