Gye Wani-Nkwanta (E/R), July 7, GNA - Nana Asare Bentum III, Chief of Gye Wani Nkwanta near Akim, has expressed concern about increasing reports of students indulging in hard drugs, alcoholism and sexual promiscuity and called for concerted efforts to address the trend. Speaking at a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) meeting of the Local Authority School Gye Wani Nkwanta, near Akim, the chief called on parents and school authorities to work together to help students to use their study periods judiciously.
Nana Bentum advised students to be law-abiding and obedient. The Headmaster of the school, Mr. Benjamin Adu Ofosu, noted that performance of students at the Junior High School had declined in recent years and blamed the trend partly on lack of quality infrastructure and equipment at the school.
Mr. Ofosu asked citizens of the area to support government's efforts at improving physical infrastructure and conditions favourable for quality education.
For example, he said, due to lack of residential accommodation in the town, teachers had to commute daily from adjourning villages to school.
He appealed to the Birim North District Assembly to assist the community to reconstruct the Local Authority Junior High School, which he said was at the verge of collapse.
