The Chief of Ashaiman, Nii Annang Adzor, has urged young girls in Senior High Schools (SHSs) in Ghana to avoid participating in activities that result in the production and sharing of sex leaks and sex tapes. This plea comes as concerns grow about the harmful effects of such actions on the reputations and prospects of young women.
Pursuit of fame
During a community event, Nii Annang Adzor stressed the seriousness of the matter, cautioning that seeking approval, followers, and temporary fame on social media platforms could lead to enduring negative outcomes.
"The lure of instant popularity on social media should not overshadow the importance of maintaining one's dignity and integrity. Once these materials are out there, they can never be fully erased, and the damage to one's reputation can be irrevocable," he stated.
Scandals
The chief highlighted the various ways these actions could derail the promising futures of young girls. He pointed out that involvement in such scandals could hinder educational and professional opportunities.
"We must remember that our actions today can shape our futures. Engaging in such risky behaviours not only tarnishes individual reputations but also brings shame to families and communities," he noted.
Proactive measures
Nii Annang Adzor, also known as, called on the Ghana Education Service (GES), parents, teachers, and heads of Senior High Schools to take proactive measures to curb this alarming trend. He emphasized the importance of a collaborative effort to educate and guide students on the responsible use of social media and the significance of personal integrity.
"The Ghana Education Service must intensify its efforts to provide comprehensive sexual education that goes beyond the basics. It should include the dangers of sexting and the long-term consequences of engaging in such behaviours," he advised.
Role of parents
Nii Annang Adzor, also known as, called on the Ghana Education Service (GES), parents, teachers, and heads of Senior High Schools to take proactive measures to curb this alarming trend. He emphasized the importance of a collaborative effort to educate and guide students on the responsible use of social media and the significance of personal integrity.
Nii Adzor emphasized the crucial role of parents in monitoring their children's activities and promoting open communication about the risks associated with social media.
According to Nii Adzor, teachers and school administrators must urgently establish a supportive and vigilant school environment where students feel safe to discuss these issues and seek guidance.
Policies
"Schools should implement policies that address these concerns head-on, providing counselling and support for students who may find themselves in vulnerable situations," he explained.
Nii Annang Adzor added that it is incumbent on all stakeholders to understand the need for this advocacy, as it will serve as a critical reminder of the responsibility shared by all stakeholders in nurturing the youth.
"I am of the conviction that this is a bid to protect the reputations of young girls and a broader appeal to safeguard their futures and uphold the moral fabric of society. The message must resonate with the hope that through collective effort, the youth can be guided towards making choices that honour their potential and preserve their dignity," he said.
