Chiefs asked to let natural resources revenue benefit their people

Essiama (W/R), September 15, GNA - The President of the Nzema Maanle Traditional Council, Awulae Annor Adjei III, has urged chiefs in Nzema to make policies and plans that would ensure that revenue accrued from natural resources in the area benefited their people. He observed that though the Western Region abounded in natural resources, it had not benefited the people.

Awulae Annor Adjei, also the Omanhene of Western Nzema Traditional Area, said this when he addressed members of the Nzema Maanle Council at Essiama in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region. The council is made up of all the seven Paramount Chiefs in the Nzema area and some prominent Nzema citizens.

The meeting enabled the chiefs to discuss the emerging opportunities in Nzemaland such as the oil find and gold mines and how these could benefit the people.

Awulae Annor Adjei told the chiefs that the vested interest in the resources in the region was enormous and required people from the area, the academia and other individuals to put their hands on deck.

He urged the chiefs to be proactive to achieve the maximum from the resources in their areas of jurisdiction.

Awulae Annor Adjei said a consultative commission would be set up to see to it that viable projects were undertaken by the people to meet the challenges of the oil find.

According to him, the Council was awarding scholarships to students to study oil technology to help manage the oil industry. He advised the students to take their studies seriously in order to benefit from the emerging opportunities in the Western Region. 15 Sept. 08
