Kuntanase (Ash), May 3, GNA - Child and spouse maintenance topped the list of abuse cases reported to the Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma District Office of the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) last year.
A report issued by the Commission and signed by the District Director, Mr Cornelius Dery, said out of the total of 82 complaints lodged with the office, 27, had to do with child and spouse maintenance. Breach of agreement, property related matters, tenancy, compensation payment demands and unfair treatment were the other cases dealt with.
It said 40 of the complaints were successfully settled through mediation, while 14 of them were dismissed for lack of jurisdiction. Six were withdrawn by the complainants and one of them referred to the court.
The report identified the lack of means of transport and inadequate funding as the main constraints affecting the Commission's work in the area.
It said the District Office has planned to embark on an aggressive public education programme, this year, and appealed to the government to resource the office for smooth implementation of its programmes.
