Child neglect continue to top in AES District

Winneba (C/R), March 8, GNA- Mrs Bushira Bashuru, Assistant Registrar of the Awutu-Effutu-Senya (AES) District of the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) on Monday said that child neglect by fathers continue to top the list of cases brought before them.

She said out of the 150 cases brought before them in 2002 and 126 in 2003, over 70 per cent were child neglect by fathers.

She was speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Winneba in an interview. She said other cases include wrongful dismissal, victimization and unfair treatment at workplaces.

Mrs Bashuru said that child neglect is high in the district resulting in most school going children being denied education, while others were sent to Yeji to stay with fishermen.

Nana Kweku Mbir, Apofohene of the Effutu Traditional area, when contacted confirmed that fishermen in the area have not been landing with enough catch in recent years, and attributed the situation to the use of unapproved methods of fishing by fishermen.

He said this should not be used as an excused by fishermen to neglect their children or deny them of education.
