Koforidua, Feb. 27, GNA- The New Juaben Municipal Assembly has launched a major drive to create safe walking havens at highways in the Municipality, for children who cross such roads to school to protect them from motor accidents.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Nana Adjei Boateng who announced this on Tuesday, said the assembly had begun 'safe walking to school' programme to ensure a zero accident rate involving children in the Municipality.

He was speaking at a road safety educational programme for parents, teachers and pupils of Presbyterian Schools in Koforidua on Tuesday.

Nana Boateng expressed worry that some parents allowed their children to traverse high ways to school adding that this defeated the purpose of educational programmes being mounted by the government to help reduce road accidents and lost of lives including children. Mr Isaac Nkrumah, the Acting Eastern Regional Coordinator of the National Road Safety Commission, said the rate of accidents in the region over the last two months had tended to thwart all efforts being made to reduce the phenomenon. 27 Feb. 07
