A group of employees of the Chirano Mines Company Limited have presented 265 pairs of assorted footwear to the Akoti Municipal Assembly Primary School and the Etwebo District Assembly Primary schools at a simple but colourful ceremony at Akoti-Etwebo.

The donation formed part of the “Footwear Project” of the employees, which was launched recently.

Ms. Hilda Arhin, an employee of the mining company, who made the presentation, said the donation was aimed at encouraging pupils to attend school.

Mr. Theophilus Antwi-Baadu and Kwame Sam Biney, co-founders of the “Footwear project”, said they conceived project because of the poor quality of footwear worn to school by pupils and students of the rural communities in the Sefwi area.

They, therefore, decided to seek financial support from other workers to help them provide footwear to school children, he said.

The project, he said, would continue to support rural poor communities when funds are available.

Funds for the project were mobilized from voluntary contributions of some employees of Chirano Gold Mines, who shared the goals of the project.

Receiving the donation, Madam Christina Donkor, headmistress of Etwebo District Assembly School, thanked the organisers for their initiative and for choosing pupils of her school to be among the first beneficiaries of the project.

She assured that the footwear would be distributed to the pupils and appealed for support to facilitate teaching and learning.
