Clergy calls for interfaith dialogue

Rev. Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) on Friday called for an interfaith dialogue between the various religions to ensure tolerance in the country.

“We have reached a point where we must project humanity and not the religion we belong to,” he said.

Rev. Opuni-Frimpong made the call when he led a four-member delegation from the CCG to pay a courtesy call on the management of Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra.

The members of the delegation include Reverend Daniel Sakitey, Ecumenical Relations Officer, Mrs Dinah Mankwa, Director of Finance and Administration and Mr Leonard Ackon, Administrative Secretary.

Rev. Opuni-Frimpong emphasised the need for Ghanaians to use religion as a tool to facilitate development rather than to divide the people.

He said there are religious excesses, which must not be allowed to go, hence the need to sanitise the media to curtail the situation.

He noted that it is not only political tolerance that must be managed but the religious tensions as well.

Rev. Opuni-Frimpong expressed the need for the building of confidence among the various religions, adding that the Christian Council intends to play a significant role in this direction.

He also called for an interface between religion and the media, therefore, the need for CCG to forge collaboration with GNA.

Dr Bernard Otabil, General Manager of GNA expressed the essence for cultural and religious tolerance in the country.

He also hailed the interface dialogue and called for a roundtable on culture, politics Vis avis national development.

Dr Otabil called for a stakeholder’s forum that would help train the clergy on how to deal with the media.
