Close down Takoradi Market and build modern one - MP

Sekondi, March 27, GNA - Mr Lee Ocran, Member of Parliament for Jomoro, has suggested a re-construction of the Takoradi Central Market. He said the new market should have access roads, toilet facilities, pipe-borne water, a day care and other facilities to facilitate the work of traders.

Mr Ocran said this at the Takoradi Market when a seven-member Parliamentary Team under the leadership of Mr Albert Obbin, MP for Prestea Huni Valley, toured the Market.

Mr Ocran said the present Market was an eyesore, a death trap and had several extensions without any regard for safety. He said the present state of the Market was dangerous and the closure and rehabilitation should be done in phases to enable traders use part as the works went on.

Mr Ocran said though the closure could have effects on the traders, nothing should be compromised.

Mr Obbin expressed his appreciation at the cleanliness of the Metropolis and urged the Assembly to work hard and ensure that it completed its ultra-modern landfill site at Sofokrom. Mr Philip K. Nkrumah, Metropolitan Chief Executive of SAEMA, said solid and liquid waste collection was a major challenge facing the Assembly.

He said a committee to investigate the fire outbreak had been established and the Assembly was waiting for its report by April 15 2007 to decide the way forward for the victims and the market itself. 17 March 07
