Techiman (B/A) Oct. 05, GNA - Techiman Market Co-operative Fishmongers Society Limited made a net profit of 3.3 million cedis during the 2005-2006 financial year, as against 19.3 million cedis made in the 2003-2005 fiscal year.
Mr. Charles Yeboah, Techiman Municipal Deputy Co-operative Officer, who announced this at the annual general meeting of the society in Techiman at the weekend said the society recorded 29.5 million cedis and spent 26.2 million cedis for the fiscal year.
He noted that the performance of the society was below standard and asked members to contribute generously towards the society's growth. The Deputy Co-operative Officer said the society's total property stood at 43.1 million cedis with 18 million cedis office furniture, 11 million cedis container, 6.4 million cedis support for the construction of market day-care centre and 8 million cedis market sheds.
Mr. James Okyere, Techiman Municipal Co-operative Officer, expressed regret about the lukewarm attitude of members in the payment of their dues as shares to raise the share capital of the society. He advised the society to explore other means of investment rather than solely depending on treasury bills, the interest of which had drastically been reduced.
Mr. Okyere commended the President of the society, Madam Elizabeth Arthur, for rendering accounts to members and advised the management to account for its stewardship every fiscal year to members. He said the practice of delaying for many years before rendering accounts did not augur well for the growth of the societies and unions in the co-operative set-up.
Madam Nana Abena Kyeremaah, Assistant Market Queenmother, commended the management of the society for the achievement and the construction of its office container and expressed the hope that they would continue to make positive contributions towards strengthening the society. In a welcoming address, Madam Arthur said 200 out of 300 members were active in the market but expressed regret that most of them had not been paying their dues as expected of them.
Madam Arthur disclosed that in order to raise the standard of the society, it had increased its dues from 1,000 cedis to 5,000 cedis and appealed to members to encourage their colleagues in the collection of bowls of fish, which generated revenue for the society. She appealed to the well-to-do members to assist their needy colleagues to raise their standard of living.
Madam Grace Yeboah (Mame Yaa), "Adwene Kwansohemaa" and Madam Aba Kakraba, were elected as new executive members of the society. 05 Oct. 06
