Co-operative Society takes stock of activities

Nkoranza (B/A) July 19 GNA - Nkoranza Co-operative Transport and General Services Society Limited on Thursday held its annual general meeting to take stock of its activities last year. Mr. Nat Osei-Mansuo, District Co-operative Officer, who read the accounts said the society realized a net surplus of 29.2 million cedis as at the close of December 2004, after carrying out a number of development activities.

The society also raised an income of 73.7 million cedis out of which 44.5 million cedis was spent to initiate programmes for members' welfare, he added.

The Co-operative Officer said the society generates resources through loading maize purchased by traders at Nkoranza maize market for transportation to other areas. Mr. Osei-Mansuo called on members to purchase shares of 50,000 cedis value from Nkoranza-Kwabre Rural Bank to establish a strong financial base to enhance the society's growth and an improvement in their living standards.

Mr. Hamidu Tahiru, chairman, said the society had invested 92 million cedis in a hotel project, to support its activities. He appealed to members who have taken loans from the society to make efforts to repay promptly so other welfare services could be provided for them.

Mr. Johnson Opoku, secretary, urged members to guard against embezzling monies they collect from traders for the purchase of maize as the practice could put the name of the society into disrepute.

Mr. Opoku called on members to maintain their co-operative spirit to enable them to mobilize more funds and initiate programmes that would move the society forward.

Nana Okofo Agyapong III, Adontenhene of Nkoranza Traditional Area who presided, commended the leadership of the society for organizing general meetings every year to inform members about its successes and challenges.

He urged them to remain united and never allow petty squabbles to divide them and called on other societies and associations in Nkoranza to follow the shining example of Nkoranza Co-operative Transport and General Services Society.

Mr. Anthony Kofi Ankoma, revenue inspector in-charge of Nkoranza maize market commended the management of the Society for their hard work and efforts in ensuring that all drivers and traders who purchased and transported maize from the market paid their respective taxes to the District Assembly.
