A 40 year-old mechanic over the weekend died when part of an uncompleted two- story building collapsed on him at Himan in the Prestea Huni/Valley district.

The deceased has been identified as Kwame Kyei Boateng, an employee of Africa Mining Services.

The body has since been deposited at the Prestea Government Hospital for autopsy.

Divisional Officer Grade II Joseph Koranteng, District Fire Officer, made this known in an interview with the Ghana News Agency.

He said at about 0630 hours on Saturday, his office received a distress call that a building has collapsed at Himan.

Mr Koranteng said shortly after the information, his officers arrived at the accident scene and noted that Boateng who has rented part of the second floor of the building was trapped under by the debris with six others.

With the support of personnel of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), they were able to rescue the victims who were rushed to hospital.

He said six of the affected victims were treated and discharged, but Boateng who sustained severe injuries all over his body was referred to Kumasi to seek further medical attention, but he died on the way.

Mr Koranteng said though the cause of the incident has not been ascertained, his office is investigating the disaster.

Mr Iddrisu Salifu Mohammed, District NADMO Coordinator, said the organisation is yet to complete assessment on the incident.

Mr Francis Adu Blay Koffie, Member of Parliament, the District Fire Officer and other heads of department visited the deceased’s family to console them.
