Mr Sebastian Akyeampong, Volta Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) on Thursday warned drivers against reckless driving on the Ho-Fume road.
He noted that the road, described as among the best in the Region was gradually becoming accident prone and charged drivers to drive responsibly on the stretch.
Mr Akyeampong gave the warning after a bus on which students of Henley International School, at Kasoa, were travelling on an excursion at the weekend veered of the road into a valley at Fume with five students reported dead.
He said the road was “littered with sharp curves” and underscored the need for drivers to drive cautiously and defensively.
Mr Acheampong said the sharpness of the curves could make it “very difficult” for heavy duty vehicles and long trailers to use the road and advised them to avoid that route.
He said road signs, reflectors, and markings were yet to be fixed on the road and called for alertness especially at night.
Investigations by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) indicate that more than seven road crashes were recorded on the Ho-Fume road in 2014 with unconfirmed reports suggesting that the road recorded a crash every month that year.
The crashes involved mostly commercial vehicles including Metro Mass Transit (MMT).
The GNA learnt that all safety measures and “signalization” made by Rolider Limited, Contractors working on the road, were destroyed by the crashes.
Mr Akyeampong called for police visibility on the road to check speed and drink-driving.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday March 11, the Ghana Highway Authority and NRSC began erecting warning signs on the road to guide drivers.
