Nkawie (Ash), Jan. 9, GNA - Four communities; Nkawie-Kuma, Nkawie-Panin, Toase and Mpasatia, in the Atwima District of Ashanti Region, have been hit by acute water shortage following the breakdown of all stand pipes in the area.
Consequently, vehicle owners have to travel over 18 kilometres to Asuoyeboah, near Kumasi, to get water while those without means of transport walked to the Offin River for water.
Opanin Kwabena Awuah, Sanaahene of Nkawie-Kuma Sub-Traditional Council, who made these known in an interview with the GNA at Nkawie, said the situation if not reversed, might seriously affect socio-economic activities in the area.
He also expressed fear that academic work at Toase, Nkawie and Mpasatia Senior Secondary Schools might be hampered when they re-open. Opanin Awuah said even pupils at the basic schools could be affected by the shortage since they would have to travel long distances to fetch water before preparing for classes.
He, therefore, appealed to the Ghana Water Company Limited to repair the broken down pipes as a matter of urgency to alleviate the plight of the people.
