Community Policing Desk Officers including some selected senior police officers in the Upper East Region, have been given orientation on community policing to empower them to effectively coordinate activities in the districts.

The Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police Bright Oduro urged them to translate the knowledge acquired in their areas of operations.

He explained that ”Community Policing is a reformed policing practice that seeks to bring police closer to the public", This, he said would help create a common platform for the free flow of information about crimes.

He added that the orientation would further make the Police Service more proactive to nib crimes in the bud at the primary stages before they occur and escalate.

Alhaji Mohammed Suraji, Director of Community Policing Unit of the Police Service told the participants that, unlike the colonial era where the Police used force, it was not so in this contemporary times.

He explained that the Ghana Police Service had been under pressure to counter the rising tide of organised crime and said that was why it was very crucial for the Police to get closer to the people at the community level to get important information to combat crimes.

He said a similar training programme was being organised in the regions across the country all aimed at enhancing community policing.**
