Nkwabeng (B/A), June 18, GNA - A 1.4 billion-cedi market project constructed for the people of Nkwabeng in the Nkoranza district of Brong-Ahafo Region and jointly funded by the Government of Ghana and the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) has been commissioned at a ceremony at Nkwabeng.
The market is under the Government's Promotion of District Capital Projects Two (PRODICAP II) Programme, aimed at accelerating the development of the district centres. In an address, the District Finance Officer, Mr. Joseph Ababio Basoah announced that the project is the property of the people of the area and that they should actively patronise it to generate more revenue towards the development of the community.
Mr. Basoah therefore stressed the need for the management committee of the market to ensure that the traders who visit the area pay their respective taxes to enable them to mobilize resources for the maintenance and expansion of the market. He urged the revenue collectors in the area to show much concern with their responsibilities and work very hard by ensuring that the people honour their tax obligations in the market.
Mr. Basoah said the market at Nkwabeng adds up to three other ones in Nkoranza district, hence the people of the area should not relent in their efforts in ensuring that the project becomes viable for them to improve upon their living standards. The other markets are located at Nkoranza, Donkro-Nkwanta and Dromankese and are organised on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays respectively.
Nana Andrews Anana Owusu, chairman of the market management committee in his welcoming address commended the Government and the GTZ for providing the community with the market to promote the development of the area.
Nana Owusu called on the Nkoranza district assembly to construct a borehole in the market to serve as a water source for the traders who would visit the place. He also pleaded with the Assembly to assist the community in extending electricity to the market and to provide adequate security for the stores in the area. Nana Kyere Kuffour, Santanhene and chief of Nkwabeng, who presided called on all the settler farmers in the area to patronise the market.
