Wa, Dec. 9, GNA - Community radio stations have appealed to Ghana Community Radio Network (GCRN) to source funds from non-governmental organisations and philanthropic organisations to train and upgrade the skills of workers of the rural stations.
"Most of our staff are not trained formally in radio broadcasting and therefore, giving them training programmes would help sensitise rural people on topical issues."
Mr Peter Der, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Radio Progress, a private radio station at Wa, made this appeal at the end of a five-day annual meeting of community radio stations.
He commended GCRN for their constant training programmes adding; "More is still expected of you as your presenters need to know the real ethics of broadcasting in the country.''
Mr Der said most community radio stations, apart from having staffing problems, also need to upgrade their equipment to reach out to all their communities in their own local languages.
Mr Israel Zaghe, Co-ordinator of Interim Management Committee of Radio Progress, said media pluralism in the country had enabled more people in the country to be informed on national and international issues.
He called on the national media houses to increase the number of local languages on their networks since they covered the entire country.
Mr Kofi Larweh, Member of GCRN, called on presenters to use civil language and work peacefully to avoid using the language that could provoke violence and conflict.
