Managers of Tongu cluster of projects for Compassion International, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), have run a reading and spelling competition for children in the Tongu area.

Compassion International has been operating in Ghana for the past 10 years and been in towns in the Tongu area for three years.

The towns are Sogakope, Adidome, Mafi Kumase, Mafi Zongo, Asiekpe,Volo, Vome, Kpoviadzi, Bakpa, Devime, Gidikpoe, Dove and Anfoe.

Over 3,000 needy children are being assisted through education and spiritual empowerment.

Mr Richard Baku, facilitator of the 13 projects forming the cluster of projects of the NGO in the Tongu area, expressed gratitude to the chiefs, parents and partner churches for their support in ensuring that his organisation attains its mission of alleviating poverty among the people.

Mr Baku said young adults had a lot of potentials that could be unearthed and nurtured for better life.

"The child we see in the classroom today is the doctor in the surgical ward or president of the nation tomorrow if they are supported with the needed resources for proper education and training," he said.

Mr Anthony Kwaku Amoah, Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Schools Project, thanked the NGO and its sponsors for their role at promoting quality education in the area.

"As parents, we gave birth to and are owners of our kids and so we must face the burden of raising them well to become useful adults,” he said.

“Let us feed them well, house them well, clothe them well, educate them well and introduce them well to God for them to become the great teachers, nurses, doctors and lawyers that we want them to become".

Contestants from Sogakope topped in the reading contest and those from Mafi-Kumase won the spelling B segment.

Books and certificates were given to the winners and participants.

In an interview with the GNA Mr Ransford Ametepe, an opinion leader, expressed joy at the performance of their children and thanked the organisation for their support over the years.
