Computer education will be accessible to youth - Boafo

Medie (G/A), Aug. 12, GNA - Mr Sampson K. Boafo, Ashanti Regional Minister, on Thursday reiterated government's pledge to make computer education accessible to all Ghanaian youths, especially those at the basic level.

"It is the policy of the government to make computer education easy and accessible to all and for that matter, all schools are being supplied with computers while some of them are being hooked unto the Internet."

Mr Boafo, who is also the Member of Parliament for Subin, said this when he inaugurated a computer laboratory of Mother Maria Theresa Haze International School at Medie in the Ga West District.

The laboratory has 20 computers worth 86 million cedis.

He said computer had become a basic necessity of life without which life in this world would be very difficult and urged the pupils of the school to be very serious with their studies so as to enjoy the benefits of the computer centre.

The Minister also advised the pupils to be discipline and avoid negative tendencies that were likely to destroy their lives but focus on their books.

Ms Lydia Osei, Deputy Director General (Management Services), of the Ghana Education Service, advised the students to take advantage of the computer training and learn all the relevant skills that would make them marketable in the future.

Mr Gabriel Adade Boachie, Director and Proprietor of the school said the school was established in 1998 with 17 pupils but had increased to 350 pupils.

He said the aim of the school was to give the children skilled training to prevent them from selling dog chains as well as roaming in the cities seeking white-collar jobs.

Mr Boachie urged district assemblies to make the effort of putting a computer laboratory in their districts to help school children have access to computer training.

Nii Otto Kwame III, chief of Pokuase, who chaired the function appealed to parents to encourage their wards to patronise the laboratory so that the heavy investment put into it would not be wasted. 12 Aug. 05
